The plan vs. doing nothing

After-tax value if everything were cashed out on Dec 31 of each year. The axis starts at $0. Doing nothing means no conversions, with its own best Social Security claiming age. Result for one example client; your clients' results depend on the assumptions you enter.

How it finds the best plan

It does not pick each year's conversion in isolation. It looks for the best schedule across the whole lifetime.

  1. Enter the household

Ages, balances by account type, expenses, Social Security benefits, and state. Married couples and single clients each have their own planner.

  2. Test every claiming choice

Every whole claiming age from 62 to 70, for both spouses in a couple. For each one, it tests the conversion amount for every year.

  3. Simulate month by month

Each candidate runs through the full tax and benefit rules, then the best schedule over the whole lifetime is selected.

  4. Tune and verify

The plan is fine-tuned to the dollar and re-checked with the exact simulation, so the number shown is real money, not an estimate.

What the simulation includes

The rules that move the answer are in the model, not left to a footnote.

Federal tax
2026 brackets and deductions, including the 2025 to 2028 senior deduction.
Social Security
Taxation of benefits, spousal benefits, payroll tax, and the earnings test.
Medicare
Premiums with IRMAA surcharges, based on income from two years earlier.
Required minimum distributions
Including the option to delay the first one to April 1.
Account rules
Basis and pro-rata rules, the 10% early-withdrawal penalty, and Roth 5-year rules.
State tax
Arizona, or the no-income-tax states: FL, NV, SD, TX, WY.

Every year's amount comes with a reason

Clients ask why. Each year of the plan states the reason in plain English, and shows what filling the bracket instead would cost. The advisor also gets the year-by-year plan, the after-tax value with and without conversions, the share of wealth in each account over time, and every claiming choice compared.

Fills the 24% bracket; more would be taxed at 32% federal.Example reason for one year
Converting more would cost about 26.5% now, more than the 24.7% those dollars would pay later.Example reason for another year

A folder for every client

Each advisor has a profile with company and name. Every plan you run is saved in that client's folder, so you can reopen it, compare it, and rerun it when circumstances change.

Return guardrails

Return assumptions are capped: 0 to 9%, and Roth at most 2 points above Traditional. A plan cannot be flattered by unrealistic returns.

Questions advisors ask

Is OptiRoth tax advice?

No. It is a planning tool for financial professionals. Results depend on the assumptions you enter, and you remain responsible for the advice you give.

What does it optimize?

One thing: the most after-tax money at the end of the plan. On the final day, all IRA money is counted after the tax it would actually owe.

Which states are supported?

State tax is modeled for Arizona and for the no-income-tax states Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.

Does it handle married couples and single clients?

Yes. The planner at /app is for married couples, and /single is for single clients. For couples, it tests Social Security claiming ages for both spouses.
